Who is God?

In 1998, when major league baseball moved toward its grand climax in the World Series, the whole world watched as the home run records of Babe Ruth and Roger Marris were shattered by St. Louis Cardinals' slugger, Mark McGwire.  As McGwire rounded third and triumphantly ran toward home plate after his first record breaking home run–number 62–he pointed his index finger to heaven in a quasi-prayer of gratitude.  Later when he was interviewed he thanked "the Man Upstairs" for that home run.

Is that who God is?  The Man Upstairs?  The Buddy Next door?  Is He some sort of celestial Santa Claus who gives us gifts–home runs or otherwise–if we've been good?

The Bible presents God as:
  • the Creator of all life
  • the Source of all life
  • the Ruler of all life
  • the Judge of all life
  • the Life of all life
  • the God of all gods
He is the supreme Being of the cosmos who alone is eternal and infinite, almighty and wise, good, just and holy.

The cry of the midnight angel in Revelation 14:6,7 is to fear God and give glory to Him for the hour of His judgment is come–the end of all things is near.  The angel calls us to prepare to meet God–to take God seriously!
