Obey

The third story recorded in the Bible when the question was asked, What must I do to be saved? Jesus Himself  answered–"'obey the commandments.'"  When His inquirer boasted that he had kept the ten commandments all his life, Jesus invited him to sell all he had, give to the poor, and follow Him.  That was too much to ask this wealthy inquirer, and he turned away sorrowfully.  Jesus observed, "'It is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.'"  Thinking that riches was a sign of God's blessing, His disciples appealed, "'Who then can be saved?'"  Jesus assured, "'With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'"  You can read the entire story for yourself in Matthew 19:16-26

We all know by experience that "obey God's commandments" is easy to say, but so very difficult if not impossible to do in every respect.  The apostle Paul even acknowledged this fact in his own experience. Romans 7:18,19,15  At every twist and turn in the spiritual life we keep running into the truth of the spotted leopard–we can't do it on our own.  And that's exactly the point Jesus was making when He stated, "'With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."  What isn't possible with us, is possible with God.

God promises to write His laws on our minds and hearts, to program them into our intellectual and emotional DNA so to speak, so that it will eventually become our natural impulse and sheer delight to do His will.  Hebrews 8:10; Psalm 40:8.

God knows that you cannot give birth to your own spiritual life. John 15:4,5  That's the unalterable truth of the spotted leopard. Jeremiah 13:23  What God does ask you to do is to commit yourself to obey Him, repent when you fail, talk to Him in prayer about what's going on in your life, spend some time on a regular basis meditating on His word in the Bible (Isaiah 55:10,11), do your best to be a thoughtful and loving person (Colossians 3:12-14), and then trust Him to save you (Philippians 1:6).  God promises that as you do, He will accomplish everything spiritually that's necessary in your life (Philippians 2:12,13), and that in the process you will be making a difference for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom far beyond what you may ever be aware of and ever imagined possible (Matthew 5:13,14).
