Pestilences
We've sent astronauts to the moon, mapped the human gnome, and yet still
succumb to "mad cow" disease, ecoli virus, over 100 different strains of
cancer, the AIDs virus, etc. Some killer diseases we thought we had
all but wiped out are now reappearing in new forms resistant to the antibiotics
we've used to fight them.
Not to mention the ecological crisis that threatens our ozone, depletes
our rain forests, destroys animal habitats, pollutes our oceans with radioactive
garbage. Concerned scientists from around the world are grasping
for straws with Save the Earth summits they hope will result in a global
effort to save our planet's habitat and diminishing resources before it's
too late.
Lester Brown, president of the Washington-based World Watch Institute,
said, "We do not have generations, we have only years in which to attempt
to turn things around." (1/2/89 TIME)
