Chart 4 - Pattern in the Prophecy Altered by the Rapture Theory

Each of the last three verses of this prophecy prophesies something regarding the two great hopes of Israel–the Holy One (the Messiah) and the Holy City (Jerusalem).  If you examine the following chart you will notice a pattern–each of these verses begins with a prophecy that applies to the Messiah, and ends with a prophecy about Jerusalem.  The Messiah will come to earth, but will then be "cut off," bringing an end to the system of animal sacrifices.  Jerusalem will be rebuilt, but then will again be desolated and destroyed.

Biblical interpretation from the early church through the Protestant Reformation period

MESSIAH Statements JERUSALEM Statements
Daniel 9:25 Messiah will come Jerusalem will be rebuilt
Daniel 9:26 Messiah will be cut off Jerusalem will be destroyed
Daniel 9:27 Messiah will confirm covenant
with many by bringing an end to sacrifices
Jerusalem will be "desolated"
(this phrase is referred to by Jesus in
Matthew 24:15 and applied
to the destruction of Jerusalem)

But now note how this historic interpretation of verse 27 has been radically changed by those who teach the rapture theory–inserting a 2000-year gap between verses 26 and 27, and converting the Messiah to the Antichrist!–changes for which there is no warrant in the text itself:

Modern interpretation of the Rapture Theory

MESSIAH Statements JERUSALEM Statements
Daniel 9:25 Messiah will come Jerusalem will be rebuilt
Daniel 9:26 Messiah will be cut off Jerusalem will be destroyed
(2000-year gap inserted between verses 26 & 27)
Daniel 9:27 Antichrist will confirm a covenant
with the Jews and will then betray
them and bring an end to their
animal sacrifices.
Jerusalem will be "desolated"
(this phrase refers to the destruction
of Jerusalem during the Great
Tribulation at the end of the world)
