Greatest Love We've all heard the screams of children, heard
the muffled screams of human pain behind closed doors of a medical clinic
or counselors office or shelter, and even heard media playbacks of the
last cries from a recovered black box of a downed airliner. But the
Jesus' scream of naked terror as He hung on the cross–"My God, My God,
why have You forsaken Me?"–was beyond anything we have ever heard.
Such a shriek of terror coming from One who was Himself divine could only
mean that something most profound and awesome was happening.
The iniquity of us all was being laid on Him. Isaiah 53:4 What this meant was that Jesus was actually experiencing the terror and horror of sin's ultimate consequence–eternal separation from God. In Jesus' mind at that moment, the separation between Himself and the Father seemed that it would be total and eternal. It was this sense of eternal separation from God that wrung from Jesus' lips the anguished cry, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?" |

True, He had earlier prophesied that He would rise from the dead. Luke 18:31-33 But at the moment He hung on the cross, the emotional weight and darkness of sin obliterated from His emotions any feeling and assurance of His acceptance with God. At that moment, with the iniquity
of us all laid upon Him, Jesus felt utterly and eternally lost, cut off
forever from His Father–"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Herein is revealed the most profound and beautiful truth. Faced with the choice of living forever without you, or giving you the chance to live forever with God, Jesus chose to give you that chance. He was willing to die forever that you might have the opportunity to live forever. That's how much you mean to Him. You are loved more than you ever dreamed possible. This incredible affirmation and assurance from God is the indestructible foundation for a lasting personal peace. Would you like to read a touching
story that at least dimly illustrates this great truth?
