God Suffered
It would be a mistake to conclude that Jesus alone suffered
for our sins. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son."
John 3:16 These old, familiar words express the crimson mystery of
two hearts being broken at that one cross!
The great German thinker, Jurgen Moltman, described this profound truth
in these words: "The Son suffers dying, the Father suffers the death
of the Son. The grief of the Father here is just as important as
the death of the Son. The Fatherlessness of the Son is matched by
the Sonlessness of the Father." (Crucified God, p. 72)

The Bible does not portray the crucifixion of Jesus as the story of
a pleading Son placating an angry Father. No, their portraits are
identical. They suffer equally, because they love us equally.
