God Pursues Us
When God came searching for Adam and Eve, after they had sinned,
they hid from Him. Genesis 3:8-10
Sin creates a fear of God. It reverses the great truth about God–it
deceives us into believing that He is not Someone to be a friend of, but
Someone to be afraid of, not Someone to run to, but someone to run from.
The dread and fear of God has stolen into every holy shrine of the world's
major religions, Christianity not excepted. Sin continuously injects
its poisonous, guilty fear of God into the human psyche.
Even among those who brashly, flippantly ignore God and declare their
freedom from God, such boasting nearly always cloaks a heart that is in
denial over its own guilt and fear. Whistling in the dark may momentarily
lift the spirits, but it never banishes the darkness!
When we sin, God doesn't move away from us so much as we move away from
Him. "Your iniquities have separated you from your God." Isaiah
59:2 Of all the consequences of sin, this one is perhaps the
most serious and tragic--it results in us avoiding, fleeing from
the only One who can save us.
